A 1911 Warehouse Wedding Venue in Chicago's Bridgeport
Bridgeport Art Center fills the former Spiegel catalog warehouse on 35th Street in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood. It's a 500,000-square-foot building from 1911 that has been an arts center since 2001. Weddings use two spaces. The Skyline Loft on the top floor has timber posts and beams, hardwood floors and views of the downtown skyline. The Sculpture Garden on the ground floor sits under a glass roof, with brick walls and a paved floor.
We planned Kristin and Tyler's wedding here on August 19, 2023, and the photos on this page are from their day, by Ian Rempel. They built the whole wedding around ferns and greenery. The ceremony was under the glass roof downstairs, with two mossy fern arches by Ashland Addison against white drapery, crystal chandeliers overhead and potted ferns along the aisle. Dinner was at long wood tables under string lights and timber beams, with fern runners and taper candles.
Planning a Bridgeport Art Center Wedding
The building brings the character, so planning here is mostly about filling the space. Both rooms are big and open, which makes them good canvases. Kristin and Tyler used draping and chandeliers to frame the ceremony, then string lights, greenery and candles to bring the loft down to dinner size. Moving guests from a ground-floor ceremony up to the loft takes time, so we build that into the timeline.
Plan the day's route as well. Kristin and Tyler got ready at Nobu Hotel Chicago in the West Loop and rode a trolley to Garfield Park Conservatory for wedding party portraits among the palms on the way to Bridgeport.
